    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions

More answers arrive with the Notice of Race. For information only – the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions are the official documents.

    Event & venues5 questions
Which clubs are involved, how far apart are they, and where should I stay?

The Games will be hosted by four sailing clubs at the northern end of Lake Garda:

    • Circolo Vela Arco
    • Circolo Vela Torbole
    • Circolo Surf Torbole
    • Lega Navale Italiana – Riva del Garda

    Block 1

All Block 1 sailing will be based at Circolo Vela Torbole.

    Block 2

Block 2 will use both clubs – Circolo Vela Torbole and Circolo Vela Arco – with the allocation of competitors to each venue to be determined once entries are received.

The two clubs are relatively close together around the northern end of the lake.

There is a wide range of accommodation available in the area, particularly around Torbole, Arco and Riva del Garda. Many accommodation options are within walking or cycling distance of the clubs.

We do not recommend any particular accommodation provider. Sailors are encouraged to explore the available options and book early as the northern end of Lake Garda is a popular summer destination.

Which club will I sail from?

    Block 1

All sailing will be based at Circolo Vela Torbole.

    Block 2

The allocation of competitors across Circolo Vela Torbole and Circolo Vela Arco has not yet been finalised.

Allocations will depend on the number and composition of entries received. We anticipate that competitors may be grouped by country where practical, helping sailors from the same country to be based at the same venue.

Club allocations will be announced once entry numbers and fleet arrangements are sufficiently clear.

Sailors should bear this in mind when booking accommodation. However, given the proximity of the clubs, accommodation in the northern Lake Garda area should provide convenient access to all event venues.

When will the Notice of Race be available?

The Notice of Race (NoR) is anticipated to be published in November 2026.

It will contain the detailed rules governing the event, including eligibility, entry requirements, racing formats and other important information.

The NoR and subsequent official notices will be available through the event's official notice board on RaceHub.

    Eligibility & fleets10 questions
Is this going to be a World Championship?

The process of the WASZP Class joining World Sailing continues to progress positively.

Assuming this process is successfully concluded before the event, WICA intends to apply for World Championship status for both Block 1 and Block 2.

The following World Championship titles are proposed:

    World Championship title
Male – fleet Female – fleet
    Block 1
    Junior (5.8 and 6.9) 6.9 6.9
Masters (alternative to the corresponding Junior title; see below) Masters / Super Masters Masters / Super Masters
    Block 2
    Junior (U19) 7.5 7.5
    Overall (Open) 8.2 7.5

    Important qualifications

The proposed titles and their allocation between male and female competitors are subject to World Sailing approval as part of the class recognition and World Championship approval process.

Each title must also satisfy the applicable World Sailing participation requirements; if there aren't enough participants entered, that part of the event cannot be awarded a world championship title.

For Block 1, WICA's preference is to award World Championship titles in the 6.9 division. If this cannot be awarded under World Sailing's requirements, WICA proposes awarding the corresponding title in the Masters/Super Masters division, subject to those requirements being met in that division.

Further announcements will be made as the World Sailing approval process progresses.

    Do I need a Vakaros?

No. Vakaros units will not be mandatory for either Block 1 or Block 2.

Reflecting feedback from sailors at recent events, the class is experimenting with the WASZP Hybrid RaceSense model to support race management.

The policy can be found here: WASZP Hybrid RaceSense Policy

Under this model, sailors can choose whether to carry an electronic device and which device to use. And if it's a Vakaros, whether or not to register it with race officials.

Race officials use RaceSense to assist with race management, while sailors remain free to compete with a registered Vakaros, another permitted device or no device.

Sailors with registered Vakaros units receive some advantages, including:

    • Start-line timing and, effectively, the official race time on their Vakaros unit.
    • The possibility of having a race officer’s OCS call cleared by RaceSense where the system establishes that the boat started correctly.

The model also improves safety by reducing the number of boats “pinging” the ends of the line.

The Hybrid RaceSense model is being piloted at a number of events, including the WASZP Oceania Championships in January 2027.

A decision on whether Hybrid RaceSense will be used at Garda will be made closer to the event; including by taking account of the experience gained during these trials.

    Is Green Fleet available?

The WASZP Games have traditionally provided opportunities for sailors across a wide range of experience levels, including through Green Fleet programmes at previous events.

For Garda 2027, the event programme will focus on the championship fleets, and a separate Green Fleet programme will not be offered.

We remain committed to encouraging developing WASZP sailors and supporting their progression into championship racing. We look forward to continuing to provide Green Fleet opportunities at suitable future events.

Sailors who are ready to participate in the championship fleets are warmly encouraged to join us at Garda.

Do I need to be a WICA member, and how do I join?

Yes. Every competitor at the WASZP Games needs WICA membership – the WASZP International Class Association. Event passes aren't available for the Games.

You can buy membership on RaceHub. You don't need it to start your entry, and WICA will remind anyone who hasn't completed it.

If your country has a WASZP National Class Association (NCA), you'll need to be a member of that too – check with your NCA for how it works.

Get WICA membership on RaceHub ↗

When do I need my NCA membership?

If you live in a country with a WASZP National Class Association (NCA), you must also be a member of that association.

The timing and administration of NCA membership requirements are determined by each NCA.

Please contact your NCA directly to confirm its requirements and deadlines.

Can I change fleet after I've entered?

Yes, provided you meet the eligibility requirements for the fleet you wish to join and places remain available.

Because each fleet has its own entry cap, a change cannot be guaranteed if your preferred fleet is already full.

Please contact WICA at class@waszp.com if you wish to change fleets.

    Entries & places12 questions
    Why are places capped?

There are practical limits to the number of boats that can be accommodated on the racecourses and ashore at the clubs. We are working with the clubs to make the best use of the available space.

Entry caps help us provide safe racing, effective race management and a positive experience for everyone.

Each fleet has its own cap, so one fleet may be full while places remain available in another.

    Racing6 questions
    What are the courses?

Racing will be at the northern end of Lake Garda, on course areas close to the host clubs.

The racing areas for each block will be confirmed in the Notice of Race. The courses themselves, including marks and rounding directions, will be set out in the Sailing Instructions.

For the types of racing planned, see What course formats will be sailed?

What course formats will be sailed?

Block 1 – Junior and Masters Games will use a combination of Windward/Leeward and Leeward/Windward racing.

Block 2 is planned to include:

    • Windward/Leeward racing.
    • Leeward/Windward racing.
    • Sprint racing.
    • A Distance Race.

All formats used will contribute to the relevant championship results. The courses and detailed procedures will be set out in the Sailing Instructions.

The daily programme is provisional. Weather conditions and race management requirements may affect which formats are sailed and when.

How will the 7.5 fleet race in Block 2?

The 7.5 fleet will sail a single championship series, with no qualifying or Gold/Silver split.

Its Windward/Leeward, Leeward/Windward, Sprint and Distance results will contribute to that series as described below.

How does Sprint racing count towards the championship?

Separate Sprint series are planned for the 7.5, 8.2 Gold and 8.2 Silver fleets.

Each sailor’s final Sprint placing then counts as two identical championship race scores.

For example, finishing fifth in your fleet’s Sprint series adds two fifth-place scores to your championship results. Individual Sprint-race scores do not otherwise count towards the championship.

The two scores count separately towards the championship minimum and discard thresholds and may be discarded independently where the applicable rules allow.

How does the Distance Race count?

The Distance Race counts as one championship race score, based on your finishing place within your fleet.

The 7.5, 8.2 Gold and 8.2 Silver fleets will be scored separately. Fleets scheduled to sail the Distance Race on the same day will start together.

The course will be described in the Sailing Instructions.

    How many races are planned?

For Windward/Leeward and Leeward/Windward racing, four races are scheduled per day. If there are concerns about the forward forecast or if a fleet has fallen behind, up to five may be sailed, provided the fleet does not get more than one race ahead of schedule.

    Pre-Games & training2 questions
Will there be a Pre-Worlds event or organised training?

We know that sailors travelling to Garda will want to plan opportunities to train and race before the Games.

Pre-Games arrangements cannot be finalised until the Foiling Week dates and programme are confirmed. Separate announcements will follow once these arrangements are settled.

Can I arrive early and train from the clubs?

Boat-park opening dates, access times and permitted pre-event training arrangements will be published on the official notice board.

These announcements will also explain any restrictions relating to safety cover. Please check the published arrangements before planning to launch or leave your boat at a club.

    Boats & support vessels6 questions
    Can I charter a boat?

    For charter enquiries, you can:

    • Contact the WASZP European Centre at eu@kasail.com.
    • Submit an “Add Charter Boat Request” through RaceHub.

Charter availability and arrangements should be confirmed directly with the provider.

    Will there be any containers?

The answer to this will vary depending on where you're travelling from.

For example, there is almost certainly going to be a container from the east coast of Australia, but not the west coast.

Please contact your local WASZP Association to see what their plans are.

Where will I keep my boat?

Boats must be kept in their assigned spaces in the boat park.

Block 1 will be based at Circolo Vela Torbole. Block 2 will use both organising clubs – Circolo Vela Torbole and Circolo Vela Arco – with allocations announced once the entry numbers and composition are clearer.

Boat-park access arrangements will be published before the event.

Can coaches and supporters bring a support vessel?

    Yes.

Support vessels and the driver must register with the organising authority for the relevant Block before operating in connection with the event.

Support vessels must comply with the WASZP Class Support Vessel Regulations ↗.

Details of registration arrangements and any local operating requirements will be in the NoR or provided before the event.

    Prizes & info4 questions
    What prizes will be awarded?

These will be set out in the NoR.

Any World Championship titles remain subject to the approvals and participation requirements explained earlier.

Where will official information be published?

The official notice board will contain the Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions, official notices and amendments. Its link will be provided with the event information.

An optional WhatsApp group may also be used for informal updates. WhatsApp messages do not amend the Notice of Race or Sailing Instructions, so please continue to check the official notice board.

Who should I contact with questions?

For entry, eligibility, payment and general event enquiries, contact class@waszp.com.

Venue-specific contacts and race-office details will be published with the event information.
